Side lies 34 miles east of Antalya on the south (Mediterranean) coast of Turkey. This triangular resort town lies along a small peninsula, 800m long and 300m wide, on the coastal plain, with beaches along two sides.

Side

Side

Way back in time Side (meaning ‘pomegranate’) was a harbour renowned for slavery and piracy, but by the time of the Romans it was also a resort. Today Side is a lovely little resort, popular with holidaymakers looking for bargain holidays. In the high season the town is taken over by the young and lively but out of season it reverts to a charming little Turkish town.

There is plenty here for children, including camel rides along the gently sloping beach. There is also a wide range of activities for teenagers, including watersports and discos. Other activities on offer here include walking, quad biking, horse riding and white-water rafting.

Side harbour

Side harbour

Side has plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés, with some excellent restaurants near the harbour.

The weather in Side is mild all year round. The best time to visit is between May and October when the average temperature is 25°C (77°F). During July and August the temperature often exceeds 30°C (86°F).

Ancient Side greets you as you arrive in town, the 15,000-seat Roman theatre and forum, with its 24-seat public toilets, on one side of the road, the bath house, now a museum, on the other. The road into town leads through the Roman gateway and past a nymphaeum (public fountain). Beside the harbour, second century AD temples to the sun god, Apollo, and Athena, goddess of wisdom and patron of Side can be found. There are also a number of Byzantine ruins within the old town, often blocked from view by festooned carpets and postcard stands, are many attractive old Ottoman houses.

Side beach

Side beach

Side is almost totally surrounded by golden sandy beaches. There are small dunes to the east, but to the west, the flat beach is lined by resort hotels which provide loungers and umbrellas for their customers. Offshore there is a choice of watersports on offer, including parasailing, jet-skis, windsurfing and banana boats.

Just up the road from Side you can take a boat trip on the Manavgat River up to the Manavgat Falls. To the west of Side is the ancient Greco-Roman city of Perge and Aspendos, which has one of the finest classical theatres in the

world, seating over 20,000 and still used for opera, ballet and film festivals. Further afield are the championship golf courses of Belek. Head east along the coast to visit Alanya with its vast Ottoman castle and the Damlatas Caves. A day spent in the mountains is well worth the experience. Here you can go white-water rafting through the Koprulu Canyon National Park, or hike along sections of the 310 mile route from Perge up to Yalvac on the Anatolian plateau in the footsteps of St Paul’s first missionary journey in Asia Minor.

In the evenings you can watch the spectacular sunset by the Temple of Apollo before wandering into the nearby Bar Street where there are rows of bars and cafes catering to the young, enthusiastic and noisy crowds. Many of the bars allow dancing and there are a couple of huge open-air discos, the Lighthouse, next to the harbour, and the Oxyd, on the seafront between Side and Kümkoy, which also has a swimming pool, live music and dance shows on some nights.
